Structure

The length of each project varies according to its depth and complexity, but a typical study would involve the following stages:

  • Read the brief carefully, thinking in-particular about the overall purpose of the report; definitions of products and the data required; what information will come from where; what interpretations you have to add; how you will meet these requirements.
  • Get information available in-house: example – previous report, sources from previous project, relevant material from trade press and Reuter’s searches.
  • From examples of previous reports and talking to the PM commissioning you make sure you understand:
  • Definitions
  • The type of market you are dealing with (young or mature?)
  • Who are the main players?
  • Trends in other countries
  • MI report structure and style
  • Check if any sections of your report are already available in completed form (example. Market background) from ‘Inteurisitic Technologies
  • Contact key secondary sources immediately – example. Trade association, trade pres. Contact companies for annual reports, product information, press releases etc. Use the phone rather than letters, faxes or emails
  • Do store checks
  • Visit business libraries and do internet/online searches of all other secondary sources
  • Start building a list of potential interview contacts
  • Start to fill in spread sheet and report templates. Keep detailed record of all sources
  • Add to different sections of the report template as you go along: ex. Add to a new products section as material arrives on each product, or to company profiles as you receive annual reports from each one
  • Review progress regularly with your PM. Send in drafts, examples, questions
  • Once most secondary sources information has been gathered and studied assess the gaps you need to fill and contact companies requesting information. Go in with an informed view. Ask your PM for help on how to get the most from interviews
  • Interviews will normally focus on detailed break downs of market size figures, on views about how the market is performing and why, on market shares and on forecasts
  • Chase up any secondary sources that have not delivered to you yet. Keep chasing interviews. Review progress of interviews, estimating and report writing with your PM
  • Complete and deliver a final report. Be available to respond to questions from your PM and to do further research and amend or add to the report if necessary.
